Local communities across the wider Himalayan and Karakoram belt have collected this substance, known as shilajit, for generations, using it as a folk remedy for fatigue and general vitality long before it had a name in any Western pharmacy. The substance forms over centuries as plant matter is slowly compressed and broken down by microbial activity under layers of rock, releasing a mineral-rich, fulvic-acid-dense exudate that seeps out when temperatures rise.

Shilajit's jump from a regional folk remedy to a mainstream US, UK and Canadian wellness-aisle staple has been fast. Amazon runs a dedicated "Best Sellers: Shilajit" storefront category, GNC and Walmart both stock branded resin and capsule products, and dosage-guide articles are now published and re-published every few months by supplement brands trying to capture search demand. That popularity has outpaced the science in places, so this article walks through what has actually been studied, what has not, and where the real risks sit.

The Science

Shilajit is not a single defined compound. It is a complex mixture, and researchers generally credit its biological activity to fulvic acid (its main active principle) along with dibenzo-alpha-pyrones, humic substances, and a wide range of trace minerals. Because it is a natural mixture rather than an isolated drug, potency and composition vary by source region, purification method, and brand, which is one reason the clinical picture below should be read with some caution.

The most frequently cited human trials are still small. Here is a summary of the actual published research, not marketing copy:

Two honest caveats belong right next to these numbers. First, the 2016 Pandit testosterone trial in healthy men was funded by the manufacturer of the shilajit preparation tested, and testosterone fell in the placebo group during the study, which may have inflated the apparent gap between groups. Second, the oligospermia trial above had no control group at all, so some of the improvement could reflect natural variation or other lifestyle factors over the 90 days rather than the shilajit itself. Researchers reviewing this literature consistently note that the overall evidence base for shilajit remains small, and that larger, independent, longer-duration trials are still needed before any of these effects can be called well established.

The Source

Where shilajit is collected and how it is purified matters more than almost any other factor in whether a given product is safe or effective. Raw shilajit as it seeps from rock can carry heavy metal contamination, fungal growth, and free radicals picked up from the surrounding mineral bed, so the same substance that traditional healers scraped off a cliff face by hand is not something that should go straight into a capsule without processing and testing.

Reputable brands purify raw shilajit through filtration, sun-drying, and solvent extraction methods designed to concentrate the fulvic acid content while removing insoluble rock and heavy metal residue, and then send finished batches for third-party laboratory testing that reports heavy metal levels against a safety threshold (commonly cited as lead below 0.5 parts per million). None of that testing or purification is optional if a product is being sold for regular consumption, and a shilajit product that does not publish a current certificate of analysis is not one worth trusting regardless of how "pure Himalayan" the marketing sounds.

This is also where regional sourcing claims deserve scrutiny rather than blind trust. "Himalayan" is a large mountain system that includes very different collection sites, altitudes, and mineral profiles, and no single certification body inspects wild shilajit collection the way the USDA inspects an organic farm. Buyers should look for a specific collection region, a named purification process, and an actual lab report, not just the word "pure" printed on a label. Shilajit has a strong, mineral-forward taste that some people find unpleasant on its own, which is part of why food-based formats like tea, warm milk, or a chocolate bite have become popular delivery methods. It is generally taken in the morning or early afternoon rather than right before bed, since some users report a mild energizing effect.

Comprehensive Precautions and Safety

Shilajit is not appropriate for everyone, and the precautions below are not optional reading for anyone considering it.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: There is not enough safety research in pregnant or nursing populations, and the general medical guidance is to avoid shilajit during pregnancy and lactation.
