Shilajit 101: What the Real Research Says About Benefits, Safety, and Who Should Avoid It
Shilajit gets some of the boldest marketing claims of any traditional supplement ingredient. This guide is our attempt to separate what real, peer-reviewed research actually shows from what is simply repeated online without a source — including being honest about our own product's limitations.
What Shilajit Actually Is
Shilajit is a mineral-rich substance that exudes from rock in high-altitude mountain ranges, including the Himalayas and the Karakoram range running through Gilgit-Baltistan. It forms over long geological time from compressed, mineralised plant matter. Its principal researched active compound is fulvic acid.
What the Research on Fulvic Acid Shows
Laboratory studies have found fulvic acid can block tau protein self-aggregation (of interest to Alzheimer's research), modulate immune response, and reduce markers of oxidative stress. A scientific review is explicit that most of this evidence comes from small studies with methodological limitations, and that large-scale human trials are still lacking. This is genuinely promising early-stage research, not settled science.
The One Strong Human Study: Shilajit and Testosterone
This is Shilajit's best-evidenced claim. Pandit et al. published a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in the journal Andrologia (2016): 96 healthy men aged 45-55 took 250mg of purified Shilajit twice daily for 90 days. The Shilajit group showed a 20.45% increase in total testosterone and 19.14% increase in free testosterone versus placebo.
We want to be precise about what this does and does not prove. The study used men aged 45-55, not "40 and above" as a scientifically validated cutoff — the common "40+" framing in Shilajit marketing (including some of our own labelling) reflects the general, well-established fact that male testosterone gradually declines from the 30s-40s onward, not a specific finding from this trial. And the dose studied, 500mg/day of purified Shilajit, is roughly 10 times the amount in one of our choco bites.
The Most Important Safety Issue: Heavy Metals
Because Shilajit forms in rock, unrefined or poorly processed Shilajit can carry lead, mercury, arsenic, or cadmium — either naturally occurring in the source rock or introduced through careless harvesting and adulteration. Lead exposure specifically is linked to real neurological and cardiovascular harm even at low levels. Purification and independent third-party lab testing are what separate a responsibly sourced Shilajit product from a risky one, and we think any seller — including us — should be judged on whether they can show real test results, not just a purity claim.
Who Should Avoid Shilajit
- Anyone with hemochromatosis or another iron-overload disorder — Shilajit is naturally iron-rich.
- Anyone with an active autoimmune condition — Shilajit has an immunostimulatory effect that could aggravate symptoms or interfere with immunosuppressant medication.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals — insufficient research exists.
- Anyone with gout, high uric acid, or kidney/liver disease.
- Children.

Resin vs. Capsule vs. Chocolate Bite: An Honest Comparison

We have not found a peer-reviewed study directly comparing these formats — the sources here are commercial but consistent with each other and with basic pharmacology (more processing and dilution generally means lower concentration). Our honest position: choco bites trade some potency and absorption speed for palatability and convenience. We are not claiming they replicate resin-strength effects, and would rather say so plainly than let you assume otherwise.
Dosage and Timing
Standard resin/capsule dosing commonly cited is 300-500mg per day, up to 1000mg maximum, taken in the morning 30-45 minutes before food — thought to align with the body's natural cortisol rhythm. Evening use is linked by some users to sleep disruption. Our Shilajit Choco Bites contain approximately 0.05g (50mg) of Shilajit each, a food-format amount rather than a therapeutic dose; we have not independently established bite-specific dosing research, and are transparent about that gap.
A Note on the Chocolate Itself
Separately from Shilajit, dark chocolate's cocoa flavanols have real cardiovascular research behind them — improved endothelial function and modest blood pressure benefits at studied doses around 450mg flavanols/day. We do not have a published flavanol or cocoa-percentage figure for our own Choco Bites, so we are not making a specific numeric claim here, and there is no research on Shilajit and cocoa having any combined or synergistic effect — we treat them as two separately researched ingredients in one product, not a studied combination.
