Hunza Eats — FAQ
What Is Shilajit and Where Does It Come From?
Shilajit shows up in a lot of supplement marketing, so it is worth explaining plainly what it actually is.
What It Is
Shilajit is a sticky, mineral-rich substance that exudes from rock in high-altitude mountain ranges, including the Himalayas and the Karakoram range that runs through Gilgit-Baltistan. It forms over a very long period from the slow decomposition of plant matter, compressed and mineralised by rock layers.
The Active Compound
Shilajit's principal researched active compound is fulvic acid. Laboratory research has looked at fulvic acid's procognitive and antioxidant properties, though a scientific review is explicit that most studies remain small and human clinical trials are still limited.

Traditional Use
Shilajit has a long history in Ayurvedic medicine, traditionally used as a general tonic. Our Shilajit Choco Bites contain approximately 0.05g (50mg) of Shilajit per bite — a food-format amount rather than a concentrated supplement dose (see our Shilajit safety FAQ for how this compares to clinical research dosing).
