Hunza Eats — FAQ
What Makes Karakoram Organic Farming Unique?
Farming in the Karakoram region of Gilgit-Baltistan is naturally organic — not by certification, but by geography, altitude, and centuries of unbroken tradition.
Naturally Chemical-Free by Altitude
At over 2,500 metres above sea level, extreme temperature variations and isolation mean no industrial agricultural runoff, no aerial pesticide drift, and no chemical contamination of any kind. Organic farming here is a physical reality shaped by the landscape.
Glacial Irrigation
Every orchard and field in Hunza is irrigated by channels hand-cut into the mountainside to carry glacial meltwater from the Karakoram glaciers — rich in dissolved minerals that directly enter the food grown in it.
Family-Scale, Hand-Harvested
There are no large-scale commercial farms in Hunza. Every orchard is family-owned, typically under two acres, and hand-picked at peak ripeness by the same families who tended the trees for generations.
