Hunza Eats — FAQ

Does Chamomile Tea Really Help You Sleep?

Chamomile is the most widely claimed "sleep herb" on the market, so it is worth being precise about what is actually proven versus what is marketing.

The Honest Sleep Evidence

The U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (part of the NIH) states plainly that preliminary evidence for chamomile and sleep exists, but is "too limited to draw firm conclusions." A separate systematic review and meta-analysis did find that chamomile may help with sleep-onset time and reduce nighttime awakenings when used as an adjunct, not primary, therapy.

Anxiety: Stronger Evidence

Chamomile has more consistent backing here: 9 of 10 reviewed clinical trials found it effective for reducing anxiety, with its active compound apigenin shown to bind GABA-A receptors in the brain, the same receptor family targeted by common anti-anxiety medications. Source: PMC

Who Should Be Cautious

Chamomile belongs to the daisy/ragweed plant family. If you are allergic to ragweed, daisies, chrysanthemums, or marigolds, chamomile can trigger a cross-reactive allergic reaction — from a mild rash to, rarely, a more serious response. During pregnancy, chamomile is not proven unsafe, but it is not proven safe either, especially with a history of uterine irritability or if you take blood-thinning medication; check with your doctor first. Best Time to Drink

Evening, roughly 30-60 minutes before bed, is the traditional and most evidence-aligned timing for the sleep-support use case. Avoid drinking right at bedtime, since a full cup of any liquid can mean a nighttime bathroom wake-up that defeats the purpose.
