Shilajit vs Ashwagandha: How Two Different Adaptogens Actually Compare
Shilajit and ashwagandha get bundled together constantly in "top adaptogens" listicles, sold in the same category of supplement aisle, and increasingly combined in single products marketed for "energy and stress." That packaging convenience obscures a real fact: these are two genuinely different substances, studied for different outcomes, with different quality and depth of evidence behind them. Treating them as interchangeable does a disservice to anyone actually trying to choose the right one for a specific goal.
The Science
Ashwagandha is, on balance, the more thoroughly researched of the two. The NIH's own Office of Dietary Supplements published a health professional fact sheet on it, and a 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis (PMC12242034, published in BJPsych Open) pooled nine studies measuring serum cortisol and found ashwagandha supplementation over 30 to 112 days was associated with reduced cortisol secretion by roughly 11-32.63%. Shilajit's evidence base, by contrast, remains smaller and more preliminary, anchored mainly to the two 90-day testosterone-related trials and the 48-week bone density trial covered elsewhere on this site.

Both herbs face similar sourcing and quality challenges from a buyer's perspective, though the specific risks differ. Ashwagandha root and root extract quality varies by standardization (look for a stated withanolide percentage) and by whether the product uses root only versus a root-and-leaf blend, since traditional use and most research focus on the root. Shilajit's main sourcing risk is heavy metal contamination from its rock-based origin, a concern that has no real equivalent in ashwagandha. Neither concern is resolved by marketing language alone; both require a current, batch-specific third-party certificate of analysis. - Do not expect either to replace the other for its specific evidenced use; ashwagandha is not well studied for shilajit's testosterone and bone-density claims, and shilajit is not well studied for ashwagandha's cortisol and anxiety claims.

- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Avoid both shilajit and ashwagandha during pregnancy and breastfeeding; ashwagandha specifically has been associated with uterine contraction risk in some traditional and animal-model sources, and shilajit lacks sufficient safety data in these populations.
- Thyroid conditions: Ashwagandha can increase thyroid hormone levels and should be used cautiously or avoided in people with hyperthyroidism; shilajit may also interact with thyroid medication. Anyone with a thyroid condition should consult a doctor before using either.
- Autoimmune conditions: Both herbs have immune-modulating properties in preliminary research; people with autoimmune conditions should discuss either one with a physician before use.
- Drug interactions: Ashwagandha may interact with sedatives, thyroid medication, and immunosuppressants. Shilajit may interact with blood sugar-lowering medications, thyroid medication, and iron supplements. Combining both alongside prescription medication warrants a specific conversation with a doctor or pharmacist, not just a general one.
- Sourcing and testing matter for both; heavy metal contamination risk applies specifically to shilajit, while potency inconsistency and unclear root-versus-leaf sourcing apply specifically to ashwagandha.
