Shilajit forms inside rock. That single fact is both the source of its mineral content and the reason heavy metal contamination is the single most serious, most documented real-world risk associated with it, more so than any hormonal side effect or dosage question. Against those limits, real independent testing has produced a genuinely mixed but not alarmist picture. Separately, researchers have flagged a narrower but real concern around thallium, a less commonly tested heavy metal, in some shilajit and shilajit-supplement samples, underscoring that heavy metal testing needs to be broad, not limited to the four most commonly checked metals, to be truly meaningful. The wider, older concern in this space has always centered on unregulated, untested, or informally sourced shilajit, raw resin bought without any lab documentation at all, where contamination risk is real and unquantified because nobody actually tested that specific batch.

The gap between "shilajit contains heavy metals" and "this specific product is safe" comes down entirely to purification and testing, not to shilajit as a substance. Proper purification (filtration, sun-drying, and solvent extraction methods designed specifically to concentrate fulvic acid while removing insoluble rock and metal residue) followed by third-party laboratory testing against a named standard (ideally referencing USP <2232> or an equivalent) is what actually protects a buyer. A product that states only "lab tested" without naming the standard, the testing lab, or providing a batch-matched report is not offering meaningful assurance, regardless of how confidently that phrase is printed on the label. Look specifically for an ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) heavy metal panel, the standard method capable of detecting metals at these low parts-per-million and parts-per-billion levels, tied to the specific batch or lot number of the jar in hand.
